Juan Antonio Montaño de Sotomayor came to New Mexico as a convict shortly before the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. He was listed as a convict with a complete set of weapons, with a wife, a female servant but no children. The next year he gave his age as thirty, when he was described as being of medium height, lisping in his speech and with fair, pimply skin. He was a native of Mexico City.

Juan Antonio Montaño de Sotomayor had no children at the time of the Pueblo Revolt, but when he returned to New Mexico in 1693 he had children who were born in Guadalupe del Paso during their exile from New Mexico. He and his wife Isabel Jorge de Vera were among the families that returned to New Mexico with Don Diego de Vargas in 1693. His children born will in exile were José, Lucas, another José, Polonia, Leonor, Magdalena and Juana, the last three married three sons of Don Fernando Durán y Chaves.

Juan Antonio and his family settled in Santa Fé upon their return to New Mexico. After his death, his wife, he moved moved to the Rio Abajo. Their known sons were José, Juan and Lucas. Three of their daughters, Leonor, Magdalena, and Juana, married three Durán y Chaves brothers, Luis, Antonio, and Nicolás, respectively. A fourth, Polonia, became the wife of Salvador de Santisteban.

Antonio Mantaño, married to Isabel Jorge de Vera, with seven children, four boys, named Antonio, eight; María, five; Leonor, two; two dependents named Juana and the Indian José; and a married woman named Isabel Lucero whose husband is absent, with a daughter named Micaela, seven; and moreover, a little Apache girl. He states that as his majesty's loyal vassal, he is quite ready to enter whenever he is ordered, but that at present, he will enter alone to reestablish a household and afterward come for his family.

Juan Antonio Montaño stood for muster on 15 and 22 September in 1681. His daughter, Leonor, the widow of Luis Durán y Chávez, whom she had wed in 1707, married Francisco de la Cruz la Cadena in 1716. María Magdalena was married to Antonio Durán y Chávez, but deceased in 1718. Another daughter not listed in 1692, Juana, was the wife of Nicolás Durán y Chávez. Polonia married Salvador de Santisteban in 1695. Antonio was dead by 1696. Isabel died on 25 Nov 1736.
