In the Chronicon Sancti Michælis monasterii in pago Virdunensi
[Chronicon Sancti Michælis, monasterii in pago Virdunensi 32, MGH SS IV, p. 84], it is stated that "duabus prellulis Sophia et Beatrice" were daughters of the son of "duce Theodorico," and specifies that the empresses was their "amita" and that she adopted them after their father died. She is also named in the Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium as "Beatris . . . et Sophia" daughters of "iunio Frederici" and that she married "Ludovico de Monzione comiti." [Laurentii Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium 2, MGH SS X, p. 492] She is again mentioned in The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines as "comitissa Barri . . . Sophia" as wife of "comiti Montionis Ludovico," and sister of "Beatrix marchisa" [Chronica Albrici Monachi Trium Fontium 1032, MGH SS XXIII, p. 784]. The Obituaire de Saint-Mansuy gives her death as "21 Jan" of "Sophia comitissa" [Mavot, P. 'L'obituaire de l'abbaye de Saint-Mansuy-lès-Toul', Revue Mabillon XVIII 1928, p. 98].

Sophia was the daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Upper Lorraine and Mathilde of Swabia. Louis was the son of Richwin, count of Scarpone, by Hildegarde of Egisheim, daughter of Hugo VI, count in Nordgau and Egishem.
