Sir Marmaduke de Thwenge Knight

Sir Marmaduke de Thwenge, Knight, first Lord of Thwenge, was born at Kilton Castle, Sep 1256. He fought against the Scots, and in command of the van at the battle of Stirling Bridge 11 Sep 1297. He was summoned to Parliament as a Baron in 1307 and 1322. He held Thwing on two kinghts' fees, with three at Kirkleatham and Kilton. He had a grant of free warren in his manor of Lud, and had weekly markets and annual fairs at his manor of Lund, thwing, Coatham, on 12 May 1292. In 1315, he was summoned to a Council held at doncaster to concert measures against the Scots. In May of 1321, he joined the Earl of Lancaster in his revolt against Edward II, and was present at the battle of Boroughbridge, 16 Mar 1322. He died shortly after, in April 1322, and had his post mortem inquisition held on 23 Apr 1322, when the escheator was ordered to take into the King's hands the lands of late Sir Marmaduke Thwenge, dec, a tenant in chief.

Marmaduke was brother and heir to Robert de Thweng. He was summoned to Councils or to attend the King many times between 1291 and 1315. He served the Crown in various campaings againsts the Scots between 1291 and 1313. In 1292, he was granted permission to have fairs and markets in Lund, Thwing and Coatham, Yorkshire, and in 1309, at Kirkby in Kendal. He was in Gascony in 1294 to 1296 fighting for the King and in Scotland in 1297. He distinguised himself at the battle of Stirling, 11 Sep 1297, and was rewarded with the command of Stirling Castle. Soon after, he was forced to surrend this castle to the Scots, they imprisoned him in Dumbarton Castle, and they released him between Jul & Nov 1299. He, among others, were ordered to guard the marches against the Scot on many occasions between 1303 and 1322.

Marmaduke was summoned to Parliament from 22 Feb 1307 (35 Edward I) until 28 Sep 1322 (16 Edward II) by writs directed to Marmaduco de Twenge. He married Isabella, the daughter of Sir William de Ros, of Igmanthorpe, Yorkshire. Her mother is said to be Eustache, widow of Nicholas de Cauntelo, and daughter and heir of Ralph Fitz Hugh. Isabella died in 1309, and Marmaduke died shortly before 1322/23.

Marmaduke married Isabel de Ros, daughter of Sir Robert Ros Knight and Unknown. (Isabel de Ros died before 26 Feb 1323.)
