Sir Robert de Thwenge, Knight, was born in 1202. He was active under the name of Will Wither in harrying the Roman clergy, who were farming the benefices granted to them by the Pope. This hostility, aroused the intrusion of a papal nominee into his advowson of the church of Kirkleatham. In 1239, he was deputed by the barons to go to Rome on this matter, and succeeded in his mission as the rights of lay patrons over their benefices. In Oct 1240, he joined richard Plantagenet, Earl of Cornwall, second son of King John, on a Crusade to the Holy Land. He was back in England in 1242. Through his wife he acquired the castle and manor of Kilton, and in 1242, he gave the monors of Kilton and Kirkleatham to his son Marmaduke to dower his bride Lucía de Brus. He died at Thwing in 1247 at the age of 45.

Robert de Thweng accompanied Richard, Earl of Cornwall, on a crusade in 1240 and in Sep 1240, he went as the Earls envoy, from Marseilles to the Emperor Frederick II, bearing information about the quarrel between the Earl and the papal gegates who were trying to stop the crusade. Robert returned to England in 1242, possibly with richard, Earl of Cornwall. In 1245, his lands were seized by the Crown, because in the royal hall of Windsor, he attacked Richard de Sarr, a clerk of the Archbihop of York. during 1246, he was an attorney in pleading and he witnessed charters. He is las mentioned in a final concord ated 17 Jun 1246. He married sometime before Jan 1228/9, Maud, widow of Richard de Autrey, and possibly the daughter of Roger de Kilton, nice and heir of William de Kilton. She brought to the Thwengs the manor and castle of Kilton, together with lands in Kilton, Thorpe and Kirkleatham, East Riding, held of the Percies. After their marriage, the family of the Thwengs moved from East Riding to Kilton Castle, in the Cleveland district of North Riding.

Robert married Matilda de Kilton, daughter of Roger de Kilton and Unknown, in 1224 in Yorkshire, England.⁷⁷⁰ (Matilda de Kilton died in Jun 1279 in Yorkshire, England ⁷⁷⁰.)
