Joan, wife of Thomas Malmains, was the daughter of Gilbert Tillieres who was as the siege of Acre in 1190 and died in the Holy Land in that year. He held Headley and Westcote, Surrey and inherited twelve librates in Compton, Berkshire, which King Henry II had given his father Gilbert Crispin. Crispin was the surname of a family of hereditary custodians ffrom before 1066 at the castle of Tilliers on the border between Normandy and France [Stapleton, Magni Rotuli, 2:xliv-1].

Gilbert Tillieres's wife was Eleanor, the daughter of Robert de Vitre and widow of William Paynell, who died in 1184. Eleanor married thridly William Fitz Patrick, Earl of Salisbury, who died in 1196, by whom she was the mother of Ela, Countess of Salisbury who married William Longespee. Eleanor's fourth husband was Gilbert Malmains, who was serving overseas with English forces in 1199 and 1203 but by 1205 had transferred his allegiance to France [Cokayne, Complete Peerage, 11:379]. He has incorrectly been called the father of Nicholas I Malmains [Cussans, History of Hertfordshire, 3:120], but his place in the pedigree is obscure.
