• Background Information. 1040 Thomas Malmains in 1201, had leave to mortgage his lands for two years [Record Commission, Rotuli Litterarum Patentium, 1] going to the Holy Land. In 1209, he had leave to go to Germany with William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury [Record Commission, Rotuli Litterarum Clausarum, 1:468] who led an embassy to the prelates and princes of Germany on behalf of the king's nephew Otto [Cokayne, Complete Peerage, 11:379].
In 1212, Thomas Malmains held Headley, Surrey, of the gift of King John with the daughter of Gilbert de Tillers, and also with her, 12 librates in Compton, Berkshire [Book of Fees, 1:68, 106]. In 1216, he was retained as the King's bachelor, and the lands in Burton and Compton were restored to him [Record Commission, Rotuli Litterarum Patentium, 190-191]. In 1219, he was dead, for Burton and Compton were restored to Joan the wife of Thomas Malmains [Record Commision, Rotuli Litterarum Clausarum, 1:289-290].
