Richard de Trafford, received lands from Hamon Massey and Margery his daughter, the whole lordship of Stretford, to be holden to William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, about the year 1200, and in the troubled times of Baronial wars with King John, divided his lands between his two sons, Henry and Geoffrey.

Richard was the son of the second Henry de Trafford. During the reign of King John, he obtained lands from Hamon de Mascie, and subsequently from Margery, the daughter of Hamon de Mascie, and the widow of Roger Paine, of Ashbourne, the whole lordship of Stretford, to be held as of William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, who by his marriage with Agnes, one of the daughters and co-heirs Randle Blunderwille, Earl of Chester, had acquired the whole of the lands in Lancashire lying between the ribble and Mersey, the forfeited possession of Roger de Poictou, the Norman grantee.

Richard, in the time of King John, divided his estates between his two sons. Trafford, Stretford, and the whole of lands near Manchester, went to his eldest son, Henry. The Monors of Chadderton and Foxdenton went to his younger son Geoffrey. Geoffrey assumed the name of his estates and was the founder of the House of Chadderton.

"Ricardus, filius Henrici de Trafford. Hee lived shortly after the year 12001 under K. John, he was Lo. of Stretford, and had two sons Hen. and Geoffry betwixt whom he divided his lands in these troublesome times. Richard, by this stile, received much lands from Hamo Massy and Margery his daughter, then widow of U. Payne of Eckborne (Roger Paine of Ashbourne, co. Derby), viz. the whole Lordship of Stretford to be houlden of William de Ferrers Earl of Darby about the yeare 1200. From Richard Fitz Ade de Urmston lands in Stretford also, and from divers others as by many several deeds appeareth. And in those troublesome times of Barons VVarres with King John divided his lands betwixt his two sonnes. To Henry his eldest he left Traftord, Stretford, and all his other lands neare Manchester which was much; To Geoffrey y" younger he gave Chaterton [Chadderton] and Foxdenton in Ouldham Parish which he and his ancestors long possessed."

Richard married Margary de Mascy, daughter of Hamon Mascy Baron of Dunham-Massy and Agatha de Theray ⁸⁰⁴.^,826 (Margary de Mascy died after 1250 in Lancashire, England.)
