• Background Information. 252 Nicolás de Aguilar was a native of Yurirapundara, Michoacán, and the son of Pedro de Aguilar, deceased and Isabel de Villagómez, native of the same village. His maternal grandparents were Fernando de Villagómez, an original Conquistador of Michoacán Province, and Luisa Pérez. When he was eighteen years old, he moved to the northern frontier of Parral, where he worked as a miner and soldier for six years. He fled from here to New Mexico because he committed a murder.
Aguilar lived in New México for some year prior to 1660. He served Governor López Mendizábal as an unscrupulous lackey. He was also the Alcalde Mayor of the Salinas district where he persecuted the missionaries with a devilish fury and humor, and because of this the friars called him "Attila."
He was called to México City to be held accountable for his crimes before the Inquisition. He was found guilty, banished from New México for ten years and could no longer hold office.
When he came to New México, he married Catalina Márquez, daugther of Francisco Márquez and María Núñez of Santa Fé. By the time of his trial, 1660-1665, they had four children named Gerónima, María, Isabel and Nicolás. Those who stayed in New México took their mother's name, Márquez.
