• Background Information. 865 Rose, wife of Sir John d'Oyly, Lord of Raunton, was the daughter and by death of her brother, coheir of Sir William de Duston, Lord of Duston, Northamptonshire, and Raunton, Staffordshire. She was in the wardship to Walter de Grey, Archibishop of York. She died cir. 1298.

• Background Information. 906 Rose's father, William de Dunstall, died in 1218, leaving a son also named William de Dunstall wh odied in 1231 without issue. Rose and her sisters became the coheirs of her brother William. Rose, second daughter of William de Dunstall, married Sir. John d'Oyly, knight, and her part of her father's estates that came to her and her husband were two-thirds of her father's estate in Ditton in Kent, and the whole of the Staffordshire estates, which comprised the manors of Raunton and Wirley, with lands in Norton, Milnese, Longnor, and eight bovates of land in Lyttchurch, in St. Peter's Parish, in the suburbs of Derby. Soon after accession to her estates, her husband, Sir John d'Oyly settled at Raunton, and his posterity made it their chief seat for two centuries after [House of D'Oyley, by W. D'Oyly Bailey, p. 89,90]. Sir John D'Oyly died about 1267, leaving Rose, who in 6 Edward I (1277/8) settled the manor of Raunton on herself for life with the remainder to her son John D'Oyly in fee [Ped. Fin. 6 Edw. I]. In 8 Edwward I, she received, jointly with her son, John D'Oyly, a release and quitclaim from Michael de Burgo of all that virgate of land in Raunton once held by Walter Noell [Erdeswick, p. 136, footnote]; and Rose died about 11 Edward I (1283).
