• Background Information. 141 William de Ros, Lord of Ros, son and heir, had a writ of livery of his inheritance, 20 Aug 1316. He seems to have been in occupation of Wark Castle in Aug 1316, and was summoned to the Archbishop's councils, 1314 and 1315, along with his father. He was admitted a banneret of the King's Household, 2 Nov 1315. He was summoned for service in Scotland, 1316-1319, 1322, 1323, 1327 and 1335. In Dec 1316, he undertook to defend Wark, and to join the Warden of the March with more men.
William was summoned to Parliament from 20 Nov 1317 until 21 Feb 1339/40. In Jan 1317/18, as joint commander, he received the surrender of Snaresborough. He remained loyal in 1321-1322, during the Earl of Lancaster's rebellion. In July 1324, he was Joint Warden of the Yorkshire Coast. In Dec, 1324, he was summoned for military service in Gascony.
Prince Edward's government appointed William Sheriff of Yorkshire, Nov 1326, and as one of the two Barons, representative of their order, who went to Kenilworth in Jan 1326/7 to announce his deposition to Edward II. He was appointed a member of the Council of Regency, Feb 1326/7. In Nov. 1326, he was made a commissioner to negotiate with the Scots for peace, and to do the same with France in Feb 1329/20.
In 1334, William entertained the King at Helmsley. During the King's absence in Flanders, 1337-1338, he was one of the commissioners to preserve the peace of the country. In Jun 1339, he was one of the guarantors, of the treaty for the marriage of Prince Edward to Margaret of Brabant. In 1340, he was one of the captains appointed to keep Edward Balliol informed of the intentions of the English Parliament. In Nov 1341, he took part in the defense of Newcastle against the Scots, and in Dec 1342, he was ordered to send men to the King in Brittany and to come in person.
William married sometime before 25 Nov 1316, Margery, eldest of four daughter of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Lord Badlesmere, who was aged 32 in 1338, when she became the heir of her brother Giles, 2nd Lord Badlesmere. William died 3 Feb 1342/3, and was buried at Kirkham.
