Bernardina de Mendoza, widow of Gonzalo Núñez de Soto, died on 22 Feb 1614, in Guadalajara. She was buried in the church of San Agustín. Bernardina's will mentions that she was born in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán. In documents regarding Bernadina's grandson, Sebastián de la Peña y Mendoza, son of Catalina de Mendoza, it is revealed that Bernardina's father was conquistador Juan de Pantoja.*

*". . . and through the maternal line, grandson of Gonzalo Núñez de Sota and doña Bernardina de Mendoza y Pantoja, and great grandson of Juan de Pantoja, who was regidor of Pátzcuaro City and one of the first conquerors of the province of Michoacán, New Spain. . ."

"22 Feb 1614: Bernardina de Mendoza, widow of Gonzalo Núñez, died in this city [of Guadalajara], ordered to be buried in San Agustín, her executors were Diego de Zúñiga and Baltasar de la Peña, she testified before Diego Rubio, notary of province, I do not send masses or anything else."
