• Background Information: 1600 Juan de Pantoja was originally from Medellín, Spain. He was regidor of Pátzcuro, which was later named Ciudad Michoacán. He married Catalina de Medina, the daughter of Domingo de Medina, also one of the early settlers of Michoacán.
Domingo was from Guareña near Medillín, Spain. He came to New Spain in 1524 as an employee and close relative of Fernando Cortés. Domingo's parents were Diego González Serrano and Ana Hernádez Zambrano.
Domino was given half of the Pueblo of Tancitaro, Michoacán as his encomienda. He married Lucía Velásquez de Loaysa and they were residents of Ciudad Michoacán.

• Background Information: Domingo de Medina, encomendero of Tancítaro 13 Sep 1527: "Domingo de Medina, native of Medellín, son of Diego González and Catalina Hernández.
"That he is a resident of Mechoacán and a native of Garuena (Guareña), land of Medellín, and legitimate son of Diego González Serrano and Ana Hernández Zambrana; and that twenty-four years after he passed to this New Spain, and that he went with the Marquis in the service of His Majesty to Guacaquaico and Honduras, for which half of the town of Taucitaro was entrusted to him, which he currently uses, that you are very poor and of less benefit, and then with Your Most Illustrious Lordship in the last pacification of New Galicia (year 1541); and that he is married and has children and a married daughter, and his house is full, and that he went to Spain, by order of the Marquis to inform His Majesty of the land, and later with the bachelor Ortega; that he was the visitor of the provinces of Mechoacán, and the Captain of certain towns that had been relieved, all at his expense"
