• Web Reference: Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands. Owain Cyfelliog ap Gruffydd, son of Gruffydd ap Maredudd Lord of Mawddy & his wife Gwerfyl of Caer ([1125]-1195). The Chronicle of the Princes of Wales records that "Madog son of Maredudd built the castle of Oswestry" in 1148 and "gave Cyveiliog to his nephews Owain and Meurug, the sons of Gruffudd son of Maredudd" [Brut y Tywysogion (Williams), p. 177]. Owain Cyfelliog ap Gruffydd was the Prince of Southern Powys 1160, until he abdicated. His first wife was Gwenllian of Gwynedd, the illegitimate daughter of Owain King of Gwynedd & his mistress.
Gwenllian married Owain Cyfeiliog ap Gruffydd, son of Gruffydd ap Maredydd Lord of Cyfeiliog and Gwertyl verch Gwgenas.769 (Owain Cyfeiliog ap Gruffydd was born about 1125 in Powys Castle, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales and died about 1197 in Strata Marcella, Montgomeryshire, Wales.)
