• Background Information. 526 Alice de Sanford, daughter and heir of Gilbert de Sanford, married Robert de Vere, earl of Oxford, and by virtue of her inheritance, carried the office of chamberlain to the queen into the Vere family, which before was the king's hereditary great chamberlain. The Veres, earls of Oxford, added the title of Sanford to their baronial honors.
