• Background Information. 870 Gilbert de Sanford held the manor of Hormade, called Magna Hormade, with Fingrie, Ginges and part of Wulfelmeston during the reign of Henry III. Gilbert died about 34 Henry II, fot at that time, Fulk, bishop of London, for a fine of one thousand marks, obtained the custody of the lands and marriage of the heirs of Gilbert de Sanford. The use of the word heirs implies that there was more than one daughter, although the only daughter mentioned by Dugdale and other authorities on the the subject only mention Alice de Sanford who married Robert de Vere, earl of Oxford.
