• Background Information. 821 Robert de Vipont of Appleby, Westmoreland, son and heir of John Vipont (or Vieuxpont) by Sybil, daughter of William Ferrers, 4th Earl of Derby. Robert was born about 1234, was a minor when his father died and came of age in 1254-1256. Robert and Isabel Fitz John had two daughters: Isabel, who married Roger de Clifford; and Idoine, wife of Roger de Leybourn and John de Cromwell. Robert de Vipont sued Walter, parson of Newbigging, for poaching in his deer park & he fought in Wales. He died testate sometime around 1264.

• Background Information. 970 By writ dated 25 Jul 1241, the King Henry III, gave to John Fitz Geoffrey the marriage of Robert, son and heir of John de Veteri Ponte for a fine. Robert, the grandson of Robert and Idonea de Vipont, was under age in 1241/2, and afterwards married Isabel, the daughter of his guardian Fitz Geoffrey. Robert II died of his wonds in battle under Simón de Montfort. This Robert and his wife Isabel left only two surviving daughters. Of these daughters, Isabel, lady of the moiety of Essendine, married Roger de Clifford, junior, Baron of Westmoreland. Isabel was of full age 15 Jun 1269, and a widow in 1282. She did homage for her lands held incapite as daughter and coheir of Robert de Vetri Ponte.
