~Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldic, Vol. III, Fourth Series, p. 257, Idonea, wife of Robert de Veteri Ponte, gave several Charters of lands in Austrefield and Bawtry in the Blythe Chartulary. In Dugdale's Monasticon, Vol. I, p. 522, there is a record of a charter that reads "Idonea de Vesteri ponte, etc, Noveritis me, in libera widuitate et propria potestate mea, etcl, pro Salute animæ Domini Roberti de Veteri ponte quondam marti mei et pro . . . Essendine passed to Rose's daughter Cecily, wife of John de Builli, son of Richard de Builli founder of Roche Abbey. Cecily had two daughters, Joan the wife of Thomas Gravenel, and Idonea the wife of Robert de Vipont [Maitland, loc. cit.; Blore, op. cit. 14]. Essendine went to Idonea, and she and her husband had livery of the lands in 1213. Robert de Vipont was active in the service of King John, and he and his brother Ivo were accounted by Matthew Paris as among the king's evil counsellors [Matthew Paris, Chron. Maj. (Rolls Ser.), ii, 533]. Robert was with the king in France in 1202 [Blore, loc. cit.], and Arthur, the king's nephew, was committed to his charge. He was sheriff of Nottingham in 1207 [Rot. de Oblat. et Fin. 392] and later of Cumberland and Westmorland [List of Sheriffs (P.R.O.)]. He died before 1 Feb. 1228, when the custody of his land and of John de Vipont, his heir, was granted to Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, the Justiciar [Cal. Pat. R. 1225\endash 32, pp. 176, 177, 187]. Idonea's inheritance, which had been taken into the king's hands on Robert's death, was restored to her [Cal. Close R. 1227/31, p. 17], and in 1230 she claimed to be quit of suit of shire and hundred courts for her men of Essendine [Ibid. p. 352]. John de Vipont and his mother Idonea both died in 1241.
