Sir John Tempest was a knight by 29 June 1349, when Johannes" Tempest et Jo-hanne filio ejusdem Johannis Tempest, militibus with others, witnessed a feoffment at Bearnsley from Richard de Mauleverer, parson of Ever church to his brother Sir William Mauleverer, knt, of land there [Dodsw. MSS. vol. 83, fol. 123, copy of deed].

Sir John Tempest, Lord of Waddington in Bowland knt. gave licence to the Abbot of Whalley to acquire land in Waddington [Dods: MSS. vol. 153 fol. 45, copy of deed]. Collect: Topo: et Geneal: vol. 6, p.307). In 1379 John Tempest chivaler paid xx^s Poll tax for himself at Waddington [Yorks. Arch: Journal, vol. 7, p.168].

Sir John Tempest's wife was Katherine, daughter of Sir Robert Shirburne of Mitton chivaler by his wife Alice daughter and heir of Sir John de Blackburne of Wysell knt (he died by 1304) by Margery, daughter of Robert de Roland of Upholand [Sherburn Ped 1691 Stowe MSS [B.M.] No. 711, fol. 6 and V.C.H. Lanc: vol. 7, p.3]. In 1353, Katherine and Sir John Tempest, her husband, brought a writ of novel disseisin of land in Wode Plumpton, by her attorney Adam Fox, against John and Isabel de Stafford and others [Lanc: Assize Ro: No. 1, m.m. 1 and 27]. 7 January 1353-4, Dame Alice de Shirburn wid: of Sir Robert granted to Kath: and her husband and Sir John all the crops growing on the land she had given them [Kuerden MSS [Coll. of Arms) vol. 3, No. 69 A 3]. In August 1354 Katherine wife of Sir John Tempest of co. York had a Papal Indult to choose her confessor &c. at the hour of death [Papal Req: Cal: vol: 3, p.527].

John married Katherine Sherburne, daughter of Sir Robert de Sherburne Knight and Alicia Blackburne.¹²²⁶ (Katherine Sherburne was born about 1295 in Stonyhurst, Clitheroe, Lancashire, England and died after 1364 in Bracewell, Skipton, West Riding Yorkshire, England.)
