• Background Information. 141 Thomas, Earl of Buckingham & Essex, Constable of England and Duke of Gloucester married before 24 Aug 1376, Eleanor, elder daughter and coheir of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, Earl of Northhampton, and Constable of England, by Joan, daughter of Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel. Robes for the Order of the Garter were prepared for her in 1386 as Countess of Buckingham and in 1386 as Duchess of Gloucester.
The exact date of the Duke's death is not known, be he died by suffocation apparently on 8 or 9 Sep 1397, aged 42 it is said in a house called the Prince's Inn, in Calais. He was at the time being held a prisoner accused of treason against his nephew, the King. On 6 Oct, the King ordered prayers to be said for his soul, and on 14 Oct ordered that his body should be given to his widow for burial at Westminister Abbey, where it was interred in the Chapel of St. Edmund the King of St. Thomas of Canterbury, and reburied near St. Edward in 1399 by Henry IV. Eleanor his widow, died 3 Oct 1399 at the Minoresses Convent in Aldgate and was buried in St. Emund's Chapel in Westminster Abbey. Her will was dated 9 Aug 1399 at Pleshey, in which she is styled "Duchess of Gloucester, Countess of Essex, etc."
The coheirs of Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, were his three surviving duahters: (1) Anne, then wife of her second husband, Edmund, Earl of Stafford. She married, as her third husband, Sir William Bourchier, Count of Eu, her son by whom was created Earl of Essex in 1461. (2)Joan, bethrothed to Gilbert Talbot, but died 16 Aug 1400 (3) Isabel, a nun in the Minoresses, Aldgate.
