• Web Reference: The History of Laxton. The de Caux family built a castle in Laxton. They were the Keepers of the Royal Forest in Nottinghamshire and Debyshire, an office which was made hereditary in their family, which they held until 1287. In 1186, the manor passed to Matilda de Caux who married, first, Ralph Fitz Stephen, Chamberlain to King Henry II, and second to Adam de Birkin, one of the Yorkshire family holding estates in West Riding.
• Background Information. 1201 Robert de Caiz left a daughter named Matildis de Cauz who was first married to Ralp Fitz Stephen, Chamberlain to King Henry II. Matildis had another husband called Adam, son of Peter or Fitz Peter.
