• Web Reference: The History of Laxton. Matilda de Caux, married as her second husband, Adam de Birkin. Adam's father, Peter de Birkin, was married to Emma de Lasceles, also from West Riding. Matilda de Caux and Adam de Birkin had a son named John, who was the heir of Matilda and the manor at Laxton passed first to him, then to his daughter Isabella de Birkin, who married Robert de Everingham.
• Background Information. 1201 John de Birkin 8 Hen.III. the heir of Matildis de Cauz, having made fine to the king of three hundred marks for his relief of the lands which were hers, and for having the custody of the forests of Notss. and Derb. which concerned him as his inheritance, did his homage, 25 May, to the king, who certified Robert de Lexington, &c.
Thomas de Birkin, son and heir of John de Birkine, 11 Henry III made fine of two hundred marks for having seisin of the lands which were the said John's, with the bayliwik of the forest of Shirewood, and 12 Henry III 22 Oct. gave account of the two hundred marks accordingly, Robert de Everingham, and Isabell his wife, sister and heir of Thomas de Birkin, 15 Henry III, made the like fine of two hundred marks for the same seisin, and did homage Nov. 21.

• Family Background. 141 Adam, father of Sir Robert to Everingham, did homage and had livery of his mother's lands, 12 Aug 1252, was the son and heir of Robert de Everingham (who died in June 1246), by Isabel (who died shortly before 14 Jul 1252 - Ch. Inq. p.m., Hen. III, file 13, no. 10), sister and heir of Thomas Birkin (who d. s.p. shortly before 10 Oct 1230), and daughter of John de Birkin, which John and Thomas were of Laxton, Notts, and Birkin, co, York, &c., and Keepers of Sherwood Forest. The said Robert and Isabel had livery of her inheritance 21 Nov 1230, and after his death, she did homage and had livery of her lands, 10 Jul 1246. [Fine Rolls, 11 Hen III, mm. 16, 9, 8]
