• Background Information. 900 Sir Philip Courtenay, was the second son of Sir Philip Courtenay and Elizabeth Hungerford. He married a daughter of Robert Hingestone, and had issue by her of two sons and two daughters. His eldest son, succeeded him. William was his second son & seated at Loughter. His oldest daughter, Margaret, was the wife of Sir John Champernoun, of Modbury. This Sir PHillip was high sheriff of Devonshire, 10 Edward IV.

John Champernou n, Knight, of Modbury, Devon, son and heir of William Champernoun, of Modbury, Devon, by Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Chidderlegh, of Chedderlegh, Devon. John Champernoun was born about 1458 (he was aged 6 in 1464). John married Margaret Courtenay, daughter of Philip Courtenay, Night, of Molland, Devon, by his wife Elizabeth. Sir John Champernoun died at Aston-Rowant, Oxfordshire, 30 Apr 1503. His widow died in 1536.
