bullet  General Notes:

~George Ormerod's The History of County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol III, pg. 414, gives Alan as the son of Sir Hugh de Coton and Elizabeth de Titenlegh. Ormerod lists his children as Alan de Coton, Hugh de Coton, heir to his brother Alan, married to Isabell, daughter and heir to Thomas de Heyton, and Margaret, wife to sir John Dannell, knight. 713

~The Abell family in America : Robert Abell of Rehoboth, Mass., his English Ancestry and his Descendants, p. 36, calls Alan de Coton the son of Sir Hugh de Coton and the heir to his brother Sir Hugh Coton. Alan married Isabell, the daughter of Thomas de Heyton.131

~Boyers Medieval Ancestors of Robert Abell, has Alan as the brother of Hugh, and Hugh being the second in the pedigree, rather than Alan, yet he cites his sources to be the two I've listed above. Boyer says that Ormerod's work conflicts with more recent research. He list "Abell-Cotton-Mainwaring: Maternal Ancestry of Robert Abell of Weymouth and Rehoboth, Mass." from The Genealogist 5, 1984, pp. 158-171 as a more recent resource. 721

Alan married Margaret de Acton, daughter of Roger de Acton and Unknown 713.,721 (Margaret de Acton was born in Acton, Shropshire, England.)
