• Background Information. 721 Hugh de Audley, Lord Audley and 8th Earl of Gloucester 1337, was born about 1289, died 10 Nov 1347, and was buried in the Priory of Tunbride.
He married at Windsor, 28 Apr 1317, Margaret de Clare, widow of Piers de Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall (whom she married 1 Nov 1307, and Piers was beheaded 19 Jun 1312). Her parents were Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, and Joan Plantagenet, second daughter of King Edward I of England. Margaret was aged 22 in the inquisition post mortem of her brother 12 Oct 8 Edward (1314), and she died before Easter in April 1342.
He was summoned to Parliament from 1317, and participated with his father in the rebellion of 1321/22, but was pardoned. In 1336, he served the King of Scotland, and on 16 Mar 1336/37, he was created Earl of Gloucester, his wife having become co-heir to her borther Glibert, Earl of Gloucester and Hereford. He served as ambassador to France in 1341.

• Background Information. 846 Hugh Audley, second son of Hugh Audley by Isolda, widown of Walter Balun, married at Windsor, on 28 Apr 1317, Margaret, Countesss of cornwall and second daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Hertford and Gloucester, by Joan, daughter of King Edward I. Hugh was summoned to parliment as baron Lord Audley on 20 Nov 1317 to 15 May 1321. He was with his father in the insurrection of 1322, but like his father, he was pardoned. he was again summoned to Parliment 3 Dec 1325 to 24 Aug 1336, as "Hugh de Audley." In 1336, he was in the King's service in Scotland and on 16 Marc 1336/37, he was Earl of Gloucester because his wife beame the coheir to her brother, Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester and hertford.
