Richard Treat was the son of Robert and Honora (Honour) Trott. He was baptized by the names of Trott and Tratt, and he was called Treat when he died. The name of Treat first appears in 1647, and in 1664 when he signed two documents under the name of Treat and Treate.

Record:

"Richard Trotte for one Messuage and half a Virgate of Bondland, one Cottage with its Appurtanances and four acres of Overland in Tything of South Trendle, late held by Hugh Holwell, by surrender of Robert Trotte, to be held by him under condition that Honora relict of said Robert Trotte have hold and possess all and every of the Premises during her widowhood, &c. Given March 4th in the 42nd year of Queen Elizabeth. Bondsmen, John Prist and Nicholas Dolling."

This is the same land that was one held by his grandfather, Richard and his father, Robert Trotte, 1571/2.

The family lived in the hamlet of Trendle, now the parish of Trull, in the parish of Pitminster, now in the Hundred of Taunton Dean, in the Diocese of Bath & Wells.

While in Wethersfield in Connecticut Colony, he had a high social standing and was influential. He had Esq. attached to his name, and was called by the title Mr. or Master. He was an extensive land over in Wethersfield, most of which he gave away before his death.

His name appears in Wethersfield records. He was chosen juror, 15 Jun 1643, grand juror, 15 Ssep 1643. He was chosen deputy, first in Apr 1644, then elected every year for the next fourteen years. He was elected magistrate eight time from 11 Mar 1657/8 to 1665. He was on the committee to lay out land grants for the town in 1654. In 1669, he was chosen townsman. He was a member of Governor Winthrop's council, 17 Dec 1663 and 1 Jul 1664.

Richard Treat signed his will on 13 Feb 1668. An inventory of his estate was given on 3 Mar 1669/70, The children of Richard and Honor Trent were:
