He was a native of the Villa de Laros (Santa María de los Lagos) in Nueva Galicia, Nueva España, and the son of Miguel Vásquez de Lara and Juana de Alcalá. He married María Magdelena Baca. Their daughter María Vásquez Baca became the wife of Diego Padilla. This couple had eight known children, all ancestors for Hispanic New Méxicans.
