• Background Information. 814 Piers de Mauley, a Poictevin, obtained the barony of Mulgrave, Yorkshire, by marriage with Isabel, daughter and heir of Robert de Turnham and Joan, who was duahgter of William Fossard, lord of Doncaster, Yorkshire, a lordship which went to Piers.

• Background Information. 869 Piers de Malo-Lacu, or Peter de Maulay, gave two thousand marks in the first year of his marriage for possession of the lands of Robert de Turnham, the father of his wife Isabella. He paid another 1000 marks each year for the next four years for the same. He lost his investment by putting the land into mortgage, and did not punctually pay his debt.
Piers was a native of Poictou, France, and came to England with King John. He was King John's counselor during his disputes with the Barons. He was present the coronation of Henry III, and soon became a favorite of the new King. On many occasions, he was the principal counselor of the Crown. For this service,he was rewarded with the custody of the castle of Sherbourne in Dorset. • Background Information. 141 Piers de Mauley's parentage is not known. On 22 Dec 1202, the Constalble of London was ordered to give him land in his bailiwick in exchange for Moncontour. He had letters of protection, along with Geoffrey de Lucy, in 1203. In 1205, the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk was ordred to give him land that had formerly belonged to Guy de Laval, and in 1206/07, the sheriff of Bedford was ordered to give him land in Wilden. He was one of the King's envoys at the court in Rome in Nov 1213. Also in 1213, the King granted him the marriage of daughter and heir of Robert de Turnham, along with her inheritance. Thoughout the years that followed he was granted land as well as the care of Richard, the King's son, and the younger brother of the next King. ~Cokayne's Complete Peerage, 2nd Edition, (Mauley), Vol. VIII, pp. 554-558
