Asencio de Archuleta

Asencio de Archuleta came to New Mexico with the Oñate party of 1598. He was twenty-six years old, the son of Juan de Arechuleta and a native of Eibar in Guipúzcoa. The description given for him on the muster roll is he is a medium build, black beard, and a slight wound on the forehead.

In 1603, he escorted four friars from Mexico City to San Gabriel. During Peralta's term (1610-1614) as governor, Asencio acted as an ecclesiastical notary, and was involved in many of the fracas which resulted in a strong anti-Peralta faction composed of Archuleta's relatives.

Archuleta was dead by 1626, when he was cited as living three of four years preivous, and when he was a Syndic of the Franciscans.

His wife was Ana Pérez de Bustillo, duaghter of Juan Pérez de Bustillo, and they had a son, Juan. One daughter, María was the wife of Captain Juan Márquez. Another daughter, Lucía, married Diego de la Serna, and a third, unnamed daughter was the wife of Matías López del Castillo. His fourth daughter, Gregoria, married Siego de Santa Cruz.

Asencio married Ana Pérez de Bustillo, daughter of Juan Pérez de Bustillo and María de la Cruz, about 1600 in San Gabriel, Rio Arriba, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España.²⁵² (Ana Pérez de Bustillo was born in 1581 in Ciudád de Méjico, Nueva España and died after 1625 in Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España.)
