• Background Information. 870 Sayer succeeded his brother Amadus in 1237, who had succeeded their father Saher de Sutton. In 9 Edward I, is holding Kirby in Sutton and Ganstead, eleven carucates, where forty-eight made a knight's fee. His son and heir was Sayer de Sutton.

• Background Information. 141 Sayer de Sutton III, second, but eldest surviving son and heir, exchanged land with the Abbey and was stlyled Sayer, son of Sayer, son of Amand. In 1267, he executed a charter binding himself to the Provost of Beverley in the sum of 30 l. against damage by his cattle, and in 1268, he acknowledged his indebtedness to Piers de Bus in the sum of 100 l. His wife was named Joan, and he died in 1270. Joan remarried John de Hildierd after his death.
