• Background Information. 954
According to Cyril Hart's article titled "William Malet and his Family," in Anglo-Norman Studies XIX: Proceedings of the Battle Conference 1996, pp. 161-162, there is a charter made by Beatrix Malet in which she grants to the priory the "villula called Radingefeld, for her soul and for those of her brothers" Robert and Gilbert Malet. [Essex Record Office D/DBy Q 19, no. 1, f. 59, Brown, Eye Cartulary i.] Hart points out that besides Robert Malet, the other son of William was also named William, and that the Worcester Latin Chronicler mentioned only two children that were taken captive with William I Malet and his wife in 1069. Hart theorizes that Gilbert might actually be Gulliaume, which would account for the mention of only two children taken captive with William I. Hart compiled a pedigree chart showing three children of William Malet and Esilia, daughter of Gilbert Crispin I:
Robert Malet, married first to Mathilda and second to Emmelina who was the mother of Hugh Malet, a monk at St.Taurin
Beatrix Malet, flourished in 1079-1092, held land in Suffolk
William Malet II * (Gilbert), flourished 1101 to 1121, sieur de Graville lost honor of Eye in 1110.

* Since there is no real record of Gilbert besides his sister, Beatrix's charter, it makes Cryril Hart's supposition that Gilbert's name was really Gulliaume Malet seem even more plausible.
