Information about this person:
• Background Information. 954 According to Cyril Hart's article titled "William Malet and his Family," in Anglo-Norman Studies XIX: Proceedings of the Battle Conference 1996, pp. 160-161, there is a "curious document in the Le Bec archives" entitled "The Miracle whereby Blessed mary succoured William Crispin senior, wherein is an Account of the Noble Family of the Crispins." Hart goes on to say "it was written perhaps by a cousin of Abbot Gilbert named Milo Crispin, precentor of Le Bec, and related that Gilbert Cripin, the head of the family, had three sons and two daughters, of whom the younger daughter named Esilia was the mother of William Malet (II)." Cryil Hart added the notices of the family in the the letters of Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury, who was the former abbot of Le Bec, to construct a pedigree of the Crispin family. Esilia is shown as the youngest daughter of Gilbert Crispin I and Gunnor. Gilbert I is shown as the son of Robert comté de Brionne Baldric.
• Background Information. 953 William Malet's wife, Hesilia, was named in the foundation charter of the Eye Priory. She was the daughter of Gilbert Crispin, and the Crispin family were a prominent family in Normandy. They were the hereditary vicomtés of the Vexin and lord of the castellany of Tillières.
