Noted events in his life were:
• Dates & Events: 141 Saher IV was the son and heir of Robert de Quincy by his first wife Orable. He served King Richard I and King John in Normandy in 1197-1199. On 18 Aug 1199, he was a witness to an agreement between King John, of England, and comté de Boulogne at the Château Gaillard. He was appointed, 30 Oct 1200 ti conduct King William the Lion to meet with King John.
During the war with France, 1203, he was captured, but raised a ransom and returned to England before 5 May 1204. Due to his marriage, he became, by the right of his wife, coheir to a moiety of the vast estates of Leicester and Grandmesnil, all of which he gained custody of on 30 Mar 1205. This lead to the creation as the Earl of Winchester, before 10 Feb 1206/07. One month later this was confirmed by the king, and he recieved a charter of Ł10 per year.
Saher de Quincy served his King as the Exchequer from 1211 to 1213 and acted as justice in many counties. He travelled abroad on the king's business to Scotland in Mar 1209, Ireland in 1210 and Germany as ambassador to Emperor, Otto IV in 1212. He also was a witness to many of the King's charters, as well as being honored by being one of the 25 men chosen to enforce obedience to the Magna Carta.
In 1216, Saher de Quincy went to France to invite Prince Louis to England and as a result the crown confiscated his estates. After taking part in several military expeditions on behalf of Saher was defeated and captured by the royal forces at Lincoln on 20 May 1217. Soon afterwards he returned to his allegiance to the King and was given back his lands, 29 Sep 1217.
In January 1219, he despatched a ship from Galloway to collect at Bristol necessaries for the journey he proposed to make to Jerusalem. Following his father's example, he duly became a Crusader, but fell ill, died at Damietta, on 3 November 1219, and was buried at Acre. Before his death, he commanded that his heart should be taken back to England for burial in Garendon abbey, Leicestershire. ~Cokayne's Complete Peerage, 2nd Edition, (Winchester), Vol. XIIB pp. 748-750
