• Background Information. 141 Robert de Courtenay, died 26 Jul 1242 at Iwerne, Dorset, and was buried at the Abbey of Ford. Robert was the son and heir of Renaud de Courtenay, of Sutton, Berks (1161), who lost his great possessions in France about 1150, the French King, Louis VII, seizing them and granting them in appanage to his own youngest brother, Pierre (ancestor of the French Courtenays). Renaud was brother and heir of Guillaume, son and heir of Miles, son and heir of Josselin, son and heir of Athon, Sire de Courtenay and Château-Renard at the commencement of the eleventh century.
