Reginald de Courtenay set out for Palestine, 1147, with King Louis VII, of France, yet returned before that Prince. Upon the death of his older brothers, he succeeded to the paternal inheritance. He was among those who vindicated Eleanor, wife of Louis VII (and later Henry II of England), who was accused of infidelity while she was with Louis VII in the Holy Land. King Louis VII seized the lands of Renaud.

Renaud, while still in France, married a sister of Gui du Donjon, who was one of the most famous knights of that age, and descended from the ancient Counts of Corbeil. By this wife, Renaud had two daughters, the youngest was married to Avelon, Lord of Selegny, yet was not heard of again. The older of the two daughters, Elizabeth or Isabella, married Pierre, youngest son of Louis "le Gros," King of France.
