• Background Information. 141 William de Montagu, grandson and heir of William, and son of Drew and Aline, was still under age in 1227, and in 1232-33 was amerced for not taking knighthood. He was heir to his father and his grandfather, and obtained possession of his lands in 1234. In 1236, he confirmed his grandfather's gift of the advowson of Shipton church to Bruton. In July 1244, he made a grant to Christchurch, Hants. He was pardoned a forest trespass in Somerset in 1247. In 1255, he was serving with Prince Edward in Wales, and was summoned for service there from 1257 to 1264. He seems to have been knighted by 1258. In 1259, and again in 1269, he made an agreement with his uncle, Philip Basset, and Ela, Countess of Warwick, Philip's wife, respecting Thurlbear and other manors. William married Berthe, whose parentage is not known. He died 23 Sep 1270. The custody of his lands and his son were granted to Philip Basset.
