Information about this person:
• Background Information. 141 William de Montagu, brother or half-brother of Drew de Montagu, and heir, had livery of his inheritance in 1178. He and his brother Richard confirmed their father's gifts to Bruton. He attested a charter to which Richard, Bishop of Winchester (1174-85), was also a witness, and a charter of John, Count of Mortaigne, in 1191. After John's accession to the throne, William became a prominent official at Court. In 1198 he exchanged Sutton with William son of Robert de Montagu for Thorne. He was custodian of Sherborne Castle, and sheriff of Somerset and Dorset, 1204-1207, and a justiciar in 1208. He rebelled early in 1215, but appears to have submitted soon after the accession of Henry III. He married Isabel, whose parentage is not known. He was living in April, but died circa June 1217, when the custody of his lands and heir was granted to Alan Basset, from whom Isabel the widow received her dower.
* William was possibly half-brother of Drew de Montagu, of whom he succeeded. William and his brother Richard appear to have been children at their father's death. This, combined with the way they are referred to by their mother, suggests they were probably the issue of a later marriage. Alice certifies that William and Richard, her sons, and their father's heirs, gave Shipton church, then vacant, to the canons of Bruton, where their father was buried, during a vacancy of the see. The grant was confirmed (1215) by William alone.
