bullet  Information about this person:

• Background Information. 141
Richard de Montagu (Richard de Monte Acuto), son of Drew (Drogo) *, attested a charter of Queen Maud circa 1148. He gave land in Bishopstone (i.e. Montacute) and Thorne to Montacute Priory before 1160. He also made grants to Bruton Priory. He married, possibly as 2nd wife, Alice, whose parentage is not known. He died between 1161 aad 1166, and was buried at Bruton. His widow married Alexander de Piro.

* Richard's father, Drew, must almost certainly have been a son of the Drew de Montagud. Drew de Montagu, the elder, in 1086, held of the King, Knowle (in Shipton Montagu) and is usually identified with Drew, one of the knights of the Count of Mortain, holding of him a hide of land in his demeane of Bishopstone (ie. Montacute), and the fees of Donyat, Shipton (Montagu), etc., later in possession of this Richard and his heirs. There must have presumably been a Drew de Montagu later in date than the Domesday tenant, from the fact that Drew, son of this Richard, in making his return of fees, 1166, calls himself "young Drew de Montagu." Authorities are not agreed as to whether this family took their name from Montacute in Bishopstone or whether they brought it with them from Normandy.
