• Background Information. 985 Æthelfleda was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, sister of Edward the Elder and wife of Æthelred, Earl of Mercia. She is known as a great woman-warrior. She died at Tamworth, A.D. 918, twelve days before midsummer, in the eighth year of her rule over Mercia. She was buried in the east porch of St. Peter's Church in Gloucester. She built Warwick Castle, which was the greatest fortress of its time.
