Background Information. 851
Ęthelwulf meaning "Noble Wolf, son of Egbert, King of England, married first, Lady Osburga, daughter of Oslac, the royal cup-bearer, and mother of Alfred. During his regin, the Danes raided, and wintered there for the first time. In 851, Ęthelwulf routed them at Okely in Surry. By the advice of St. Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, he granted the church the tithe of all his dominions.
He married his second wife while on a pilgrimage to Rome in 855. She was Judith, the daughter of King Charles the Bald, of France. When he returned home, it is said that he make his son, Ethelbald king of Wessex, and retained Kent for his own rule. He died 13 Jan 857, and was buried at Stamridge, his body later being removed to Winchester.
Ęthelwulf was succeeded by each of his four sons in turn, the youngest of whom was Alfred the Great.

Ęthelwulf was married to Osburga, a daughter of Oslac, and English nobleman and direct descendant of Cedric. By her he had five sons and one daughter. After the death of Osburga, he married a young wife, Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, Emperor and King of France, and great granddaugher of the Emperor Charlemagne. By her, he left no issue. She later married Baldwin, Count of Flands, and became ancestor of Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror. Ęthelwulf died 18 Jan 857, after a reign of eighteen years. He was succeeded by his youngest son.

Ęthelwulf married Osburga, daughter of Oslac. His second wife was Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, emperor and king of France. He had no children with Judith. Two of his sons succeeded him, one died, the other was killed in battle. They were followed by their youngest brother, Alfred.
