Egbert was King of Wessex, 802-827 and was the first King of all England, 827-836. He married Ręburga, of unknown origin. The male line of Kings descends from him to Edward the Confessor. 160

Egbert, who, exiled by the King Brintric, went to France and was given refuge by Charlemagne. He was chosen king in 800, reigned until 836. He reduced the seven provinces of England under his control, and ruled over Wessex, Sussex, Essex, and Kent as lord and king, over the rest of england only as sovereign over their kings. He was succeeded by his son Ęthelwulf.

Reigned 802-839. In 800 at the decease of King Brithric, Egbert was called by the voice of his countrymen to assume the Government of Wessex, and he subsequently succeeded in reducing all the Kingdoms of the Heptarchy under his sway. His reign, a long and glorious one, is memorable for the great victories he achieved over the Danes.

Ecgbert or Egbert, who succeeded to the crown of the West Saxons upon the death of King Bithrick in A.D. 800, and in the course of the first twenty years of his reign he succeeded in uniting the whole heptarchy under his rule. He was seventheeth king of the West Saxons and the first Saxon king of England. He married the Lady Redburga by whom he had a daughter and two sons, the eldest who succeeded him. Ecgbert died in 839.

King Egbert is not the first of his line, yet he is considered the first King of England. His ancestry begins with:

Cerdic of Wessex, a patriarch and ancestor of all subsequent Kings of Wessex, of Royal Saxon blood, arrived in Hampshire in 495, and in 519, gained a great victory at Charford. He later conquered the section of the county now known as Hampshire and Somerset. In 530, he conquered the Ise of Wight. He died in 534, leaving his crown to his son,

Egbert, call thed first king of England, was born about 775 and fled from his cousin Brethrick, taking refuge in the court of Charlemagne. He stayed there for about twelve years, serving as one of his captain. Once Brethrick from poisoning by his wife, Egbert returned to England. In 802, at Winchester, he wsa crowned king of the West Saxons. He subdued West Wales, or Corwall, defeated the king of Mercia at Ellandune, annexed Kent, and in 829 became overlord of all the English kings and gave the name of England to the whole realm. The Danes attempted an invasion at Hingston Down in Cornwall, but were defeated by King Egbert. He married Lady Redburga and dyed in 839. He was buried at Winchester and was succeeded by his son Ęthelwulf, "Noble Wolf."
