• Background Information: 160 Jean de Brienne, son of Berengaria of Leon and Jean de Brienne, King of Jerusalem, died in 1296. He was the Grand Butler of France in 1258. He married twice, first to Mary Widow of Alexander II, King of Scotland, and daughter of Enguerrand de Coucy, who died without heir. His second wife, whom he married in 1251, was Jeanne, daughter of Geoffrey V, vicomte of Chateaudun by his wife Clemence, daughter of William des Roches, who died 1222 & was the Seneschal of Anjou, Maine & Touraines by his wife Marguerite of Sable. Their daughter, Blanche de Brienne, Lady of Loupeland, married William de Finnes.

Jean de Brienne married Jeanne de Châteaudun, widow of Jean comté de Montford, anddaughter of Geoffroy VI vicomté de Châteaudun and his second wife Clémence des Roches. "The Chronique de Guillaume de Nangis records in 1244 that Jean Emperor of Constantinople sent "ses trios fils, Alphonse, Jean et Louis, encore enfants" to Louis IX King of France [Guillaume de Nangis, p. 153]. "Jehan fiuz le roy Jehan de Jherusalem, bouteillier de France" instituted masses for "nostre pere le roy Jehan de Jherusalem et empereur de Costantinoble…et madame Berangiere sa fame jadis nostre mere" in the church of St Paul, Paris by charter dated Oct 1294 [Nouvelles Preuves I, p. 41]. Joinville records that "l´empereris s´en alla en France" (dated to circa 1249 from the context) and took with him "monsignour Jehan d´Acre son frère" whom he married to "la contesce de Montfort" [Natalis de Wailly (ed.)
