Jean de Brienne married as his first wife Mary, daughter of Conrad de Montferrat by his third wife Isabella d'Anjou, daughter of Amaury I, King of Jerusalem. Jean became King of Jersualem by election of the Barons, in right of his wife, who died shortly leaving daughter and heiress, Yolande. As his second wife, he married Stephanie, daughter and heir of Leo, King of Armenia. Jean returned to Europe when his daughter, Yolande married. He was then elected Latin Emperor of Constantinople in 1288. Jean married, as his third wife, 1224, Berengaria of León, daughter of Alfonso IX, King of León and his wife Berengaria de Castile.

Jean de Brienne was the son of Erard II de Brienne and his wife Agnes de Montbéliard. He was crowned as Emperor of Constantinople in 1231. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1237 in Constantinople of "rex Iohannes " [Chronica Albrici Monachi Trium Fontium 1237, MGH SS XXIII, p. 941].
Jean de Brienne's first wife was Marie Queen of Jerusalem, daughter of Corrado Marchese di Monferrat and his third wife Isabelle Queen of Jerusalem. His second wifewas Rita of Armenia daughter of Lewon I King of Armenia and his wife Isabel. As his third wife, Jean married doña Berenguela de Castilla y León the daughter of don Alfonso IX King of León and his wife doña Berenguela de Castilla.
