• Background Information. 619 John Schedde was born about 1450. He was under age at the time of the death of his father in 1467. His father had left him a house in the parish of Chawreth. Since there are no records about him found at Sudbury later than 1483, he must have settled at Chawreth about 1485. John Schedde's name appears in numerous entries in the court rolls of Sudbury between 1471 and 1483.
In 1845, John Schedde is mentioned as a witness on a deed of in Chawreth on the Feast of St. Matthew, 6 Henry VII (22 Sep 1490). John's name doesn't appear in the record books for another thirty years. In 14 Henry VIII a subsidy was granted to that monarch by Parliament, which was practically as inclusive as a male poll-tax because even farm laborers and servants were taxed for their mere wages. The subsidy was paid in two installments, in 1523 and 1524. For the first payment in 1523, the for Chawreth in Dunmow Hundred, Essex show John Shedd, Senior taxed 4d. for goods rated at 20s, and John Shedd, Junior, taxed 20s on goods rated at 20 pounds. For the second payment in 1524, John Shead (Junior) continues on the list as taxed 20s on 20 pounds, but John Shedd, Senior, disappears from the list, so it would seem that the elder John Shedd most have died in 1523, at the age of over seventy years. [Lay Subsidies, Essex, 108-161 & 108-202, Record Office London] An examination of the subsidy rolls of 1523-25 for the two hundred parishes of the western half of Essex County shows no others with the name Shedd. So, it seems evident, that these two John Shedds in Chawreth (now Broxted) in 1523 were father and son, and ancestors of all the Shedds in that vicinity during the following century.
