• Background Information. 1188 The terre tenancy of North Cheriton was held by the Huse family. Ralph Huse in 1280, probably the owner of 1256 who had settled his estates on his son William, [Cal. Inq. p.m. ii, p. 178] and by Robert Burnell, bishop of Bath (d. 1292). [Cal. Inq. p.m. iii, p. 49] Joan of St. Martin, widow of William de Brayboeuf (d. 1284), in 1285 claimed one third in dower from Hugh Burnell, brother of Robert. [P.R.O., CP 40/60, rot. 116; Cal. Inq. p.m. ii, p. 310; S.R.S. iii. 26.] Robert's heir was Hugh's son Philip (d. 1294) [Cal. Inq. p.m. iii, pp. 49, 120-5] who was succeeded by his son Edward (d. 1315). [Ibid. v, p. 394] Edward's heir was his sister Maud, wife successively of John Lovel (d. 1314) and Sir John Haudlo (d. 1346). [S.R.S. extra ser. 396; Cal. Inq. p.m. viii, p. 495; Cal. Fine R. 1337-47, 477; Abbrev. Rot. Orig. (Rec. Com.), ii. 180] Maud's son John Lovel (d. 1347) and his wife Isabel (d. 1349) were succeeded in turn by their sons John (d. a minor 1361) and John Lovel (d. 1408). [Cal. • Background Information. 1352 Robert Burnell was a great purchaser, lord chancellor, and Bishop of Bath and Wells, who dying in the 21st of Edward I. Sir Philip Burnell was his nephew and heir; whose son Edward died possessed of the manor of Billingford, in the 9th of Edward II. sans issue, and Maud his sister and heir, the wife of Sir John Handlo, possessed it.

• Background Information. 1284 The manor of Rotherhithe, which in 1280 and afterwards was held by Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells, partly of the Prior of Bermondsey for suit at his court, [Feet of F. Surr. Mich. 8 Edw. I, no. 6; Trin. 18 Edw. I, no. 29, 30] and partly of the Earl of Gloucester for suit at his court of Camberwell. [Chan. Inq. p.m. 21 Edw. I, no. 50] The prior and convent granted to Robert and his heirs a way within the vill, to drive cattle to water in the prior's park which adjoined the Thames at Rotherhithe. The bishop died in 1292, [Chan. Inq. p.m. 21 Edw. I, no. 50] while he was in attendance on the king at Berwick, [Ibid.] and he left as heir Philip the son of his brother Hugh. [Ibid.] This was Sir Philip Burnell of Acton Burnell in Shropshire, who married Maud daughter (C.P. says Maud is the sister) of Richard Earl of Arundel. He died in 1294, and his son and heir was Edward Lord Burnell. The latter, at his death in 1315, held 5 acres of land in Rotherhithe of the prior, by service of 5s. and suit of court, and of the Earl of Gloucester 24 acres, of which 16 acres were below high water mark and 8 acres were dry. His heir was his sister Maud, the wife of John Lovel Lord Lovel de Titmersh. [Chan. Inq. p.m. 9 Edw. II, no. 67] She, after the death of this husband in 1315, married John de Handlo, on whom, in conjunction with herself, the manor was settled in 1331. [Feet of F. Div. Co. East. 5 Edw. III]
