• Background Information. 1558 William Pellett, of Steyning, died between 22 Aug 1558 and 15 Sep 1558, the dates of his will and its probate. He was describe as being under age 21 in his father's 1531 will, in which he was left lands in Steyning and other parishes in Sussex. He was a member of Parliament for Teyning, Nov. 1556 [S.T. Bindoff, The House of Commons, 1509-1558, 3 vols.] He bought the Manor of Charlton cum Ashurst in Steyning on 13 May 1557.
The name of William's wife was not mentioned in his will, likely because she died before he did. William does mention his eldest son Richard; son John; brothers Richard & Thomas; daughters Margaret, Agnes, Catherine, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne and Jane; an expected child; and sister's daughter Alice Lambolde. Overseers were to be his cousin John Gratwyck of Cofold and his brothers Richard Pellett and Thomas Pellett.
It is no certain how John Gratwyck or Gratwicke was William's cousin. John was the son of James Gratwicke of Coford and Seaford, Sussex, and it has been suggested that John's mother, wife of James Gratwicke, was the duaghter of William Pellet of Steyning.
