Francisco Xavier de Sotomayor escaped to El Paso in 1680 at the time of the Pueblo Revolt. He was a widower with a child of three or four years. In departing for New Spain, he left his child with relatives who later brought her back to New Mexico with the Reconquest. She was Josefa Xavier, "orphan and poor,' wo married Luís García at Bernailillo in August 1704. Her mother was Juana Francisca Baca, her father at this date was stationed at the Presidio del Gallo in Nueva Vizcaya.

Luís García (20), soldier of the Santa Fe Presidio, son of Sargento Mayor Alonso García and Doña Ana de Vera Jorge, both deceased, and Josefa Xavier living in Bernalillo, daughter of Captain Francisco Xavier and Doña Francisca Baca, of New Mexico origin now living in El Presidio de Gallo in Nueva Vizcaya. Groom requests some sort of dispensation for being related to bride, in view of services rendered by his father, who died in action and by his grandfather, Maes de Campo Alonso García deceased. - Witnesses: Jose de Quinatana, Notary; Jose López (51), Joaquin Sedillo (29), Pedro López (50). The pair married later in same month, with witnesses Juan Varela and Cristobal Jaramillo.
