• Background Information. 1225 William Heron, son and heir, was aged 18 at the time of his father's death. Being within age at the time, the king was entitled to the wardship and marriage of him; yet this family was then so favoured by the crown, that, notwithstanding his infancy, he had the immediate livery of his barony, on paying his relief of one hundred marks. He inherited Ford, Crucum, Kynmerston and Hetpole in Northumberland, as heir to Odonel de Ford, his grandfather. He was one of the barons, ex parte regis, in the battle of Lewes 14 Mar 1264; and one of the fifty-six barons summoned by Edward I to meet him at Norham, 3 Jun 1291, cum equis et armis et toto servitio quod nobis debetis, when Edward went there to give judgment between the ten competitors for the crown of Scotland. He died at New castle on Sunday preceding St. Thomas in 1296, seised of the Barony of Heron; and of the estates of Bokenfield whereof his father died seised. He married two wives; first Christiana, daughter and sole heir of Roger de Notton; secondly, Mary, who survived him, but had no issue. By Christiana de Notton, he had issue, Walter, who died in his father's life-time.
