• Web Reference: History of the Earl Baliol Family. Hugh de Baliol was also described by Dugdale as having "benefitted himself not a little in the troublesome times of King John and, even at the great entrance of Henry III, could not forbear his wonted course of plundering." Hugh was married to Cecily de la Fontaine. Some time around 1228, he was succeeded by his son John who, having been born at Barnard castle about 1216, would have been a meer adolescent at the time.
• Background Information. 1256 Bernard was succeeded by his son Eustace, who in 2 Richard I, gave £100 for license to marry the widow of Robert Fitz Piers, and fifty marks to have livery of the lordship of Mere. Eustace was succeeded by his son Hugh, heard of in 1212, 1216 and 1217. Hugh de Baliol confirmed to the Abbot Peter and the churches of churches and Ingleby and Kirby in Clevelad, and Ingleby Mill in 1190 and 1211.
