bullet  Information about this person:

• Background Information. 871
Rihacrd Comyn had a grant of the castle of Northallerton in 1144, and another from King David and Earl Henry his son to himself and his wife Hextilda, and their heirs, or certain lands in Tynedale. Between the years of 1153 and 1159, he gave the monks of St. Mary of Kelso the church of Lyntunrudderic for the souls of his lord the Earl Henry and his own son John, whose bodies were buried at Kelso, on condition that he himself, his wife and children, should be received into the brotherhood of the convent, and be made partakers of its spiritual benefits. This grant was confirmed from time to time during the next century.

About the same time, or before 1162, Rihacrd Comyn and his wife granted the lands of Carraw to the monks of Hexham, with similar conditions of confraternity to himself, his wife, and his brother Walter. He probably was the Richard Comyn mentioned as one of the hostages in the treaty of Falaise, 8 Dec 1174, and it may have been he who was fined £100 in 1176 for not attending the Justice ayre in Northumberland.

Richard Comyn died between 1176 and 1182, when his widow married Malcom, Earl of Atholl. Richard married Hextild, about 1145 , daughter of Huctred of Tynedale by his wife Bethoc, the daughter of Donald Bane.

Donald Bane
had only one child, Bethoc who married Huctred of Tynedale, son of Waldef, about 1145. Their daughter, Hextilda, married Richard Comyn as her first husband. Their great-great grandson was John Comyn of Tynedale and Badenoch who was a Competitor for the Crown of Scotland, 3 Aug 1291. He married Alianora, sister of John Balliol, King of Scotland.

• Background Information. 1275
Henry III, in 1262, confirmed to John Comyn of Badenoch certains land in Tynedale that had been granted to his great grandfather, Richard Comyn and Hextilda his wife, daughter of Huctred son of Waldeve, by King David and Henry his son. [Hodgson's Northumberland, v. ii, part 3, pl 396, Hexham Priory II, The Black Book (Surtees Society), pp. 84-85] The existence of Huctred, son of Waldeve is proved by the Pipe Roll of 1130, which shows that he was at that time a man of position in Northumberland.
