• Web Reference: Marie Couness of Boulogne. Marie was the youngest daughter of King Stephen of England and his wife, Matilda I, Countess of Boulogne. She became a nun and was elected Abbess of Romsey in 1155. In 1160, Matthew of Alsace abducted Marie from the abbey, and forced her to marry him in defiance of her religious vows. From this marriage, Marie gave birth to two daughter, Ida and Mathilde. Marie's maggage to Matthew was annulled in 1170, the same year that Mathilde was born. Following the annulment, Marie returned the abbey where she died 25 Jul 1182 at the age of 46.
